GRANT and BUCKNER AT FT.DONELSON IN FEB., 2008
After their successful appearance at the Ft. Donelson National Park last five years, both GRANT & BUCKNER returned to reenact the capture and surrender of Ft. Donelson. Each year of the past five when GRANT and BUCKNER appeared, a record crowd was on hand. Although temperatures remained cold and a snowfall took place both Sat. & Sun before the surrender but let up before the crowd formed. GRANT was portrayed by UVU Past C-in-C RON BAIR who is considered to be the premier Grant portrayer in the U.S. BUCKNER was portrayed by JIM JEAN, who has been doing BUCKNER for twelve years. Although JEAN has brought BUCKNER to the Fort in the past, he is always impressive. For the reenactment of the actual surrender, the DOVER HOTEL, where BUCKNER had his headquarters in 1862, was opened and many of the spectators were able to get inside and witness the meeting of Grant and Buckner, two longtime friends. Buckner always called Grant "SAM" (as most of the West Pointers had done) and Grant always referred to "BUCK". The room was hushed as the two men inside the hotel, and exchanged greetings. When Gen. BUCKNER attempted to present his sabre to Gen. Grant, the Union Brig. Gen. refused it by pointing out that the decision to surrender the fort was "heroic" and .."saved lives on both sides." The 50th Tenn. Infantry (CSA) sponsored the appearances and were the host reenactor group. If you would like more information on the appearance of GRANT & BUCKNER, just click on the spinning "letter" in the box.
UPDATE * UPDATE : New Film Debuts at Ft.Donelson in the Spring of 2007."A PLACE FOR HEROES" is the theme.

NEW MUSEUM OF MILITARY UNIFORMS OPENS IN SOUTH FLORIDA-MAY BE LARGEST COLLECTION
Over a year ago, a young man named GARY GOLDFARB called then Commander-In-Chief BAIR for his thoughts on a U.S. Military Museum featuring uniforms and related artifacts. BAIR, who helped put the GAR MUSEUM together in St.Cloud, Fl. and had displayed many of his own CW artifacts there, was interested to say the least. He was overwhelmed when he learned that GOLDFARB had over 1100 uniforms covering the period of 1850 to 1903. The CW and Indian War period comprised the greatest number of uniforms, all original!! In addition, GOLDFARB had over 4000 artifacts ranging from weapons to knapsacks, etc....again, all original! Commander BAIR said he believes this to be the largest collection of uniforms owned by one individual. In April the museum quietly opened in Delray Beach on the second floor of an antique Mall owned by GOLDFARB. "GARY owns the building, and completely did it over and installed an elevator to accommodate anyone with disabilities. The wide staircase sits in the center of the store and you can look up and catch a glimpse of the displays", BAIR said. Along with the uniforms are displayed various headgear. Officers uniforms have the sashes in place, if they were available. All uniforms are featured on manniquens (as are the headgear), displayed two to three rows deep behind a locked glass wall. "A guide identifying each item is on the glass wall so it's easy to find uniforms of personal interest," BAIR said. "This is a must see place to visit when you come to Florida." The photo to the right shows GARY & RON with a few of the CW period uniforms. The number of uniforms owned by GOLDFARB is so great that two to three times a year, the display will be rotated just to display them all. GARY says of his massive collection; " some guys collect baseball cards, I just happen to collect military uniforms.!" "Knowing that a man wore each of the uniforms can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck", said SANDEE BAIR, Cmdr. of the Gen. US Grant Command Post. SANDEE was on hand to make a photgraphic record of the displays. Oh, yeh..it's all FREE.No admission fee and the parking is free as well !! Want to learn more? Or get directions to the Museum? Recently I spoke at a well known Southern College, and following the presentation a student came up to me to show me a letter from his CW ancestor, carefully protected and preserved in a vinyl cover. The ol' Reb soldier talked about the confusion of the CSA flags on the field of battle. This was in the very early months in the war and there was no REB BATTLEFLAG seen in battle. The letter went on to say that clever rebs decided to use their red long-johns, tied to a stick, pole or branch. I agreed it was a good idea, and admitted that I had never seen any other references to this and I thanked him for sharing the letter. But I must it admit, it kept lingering in my mind on the long drive home and I couldn't help wondering what it would have been like if the idea had spread throught the Rebel Army? So, with tongue in cheek, I offer the following....... In the early days of the war, when red long-johns flew on the battlefields, they became a target for the Yanks. In fact, they captured so many, they eventually became known as "UNION SUITS"> Now, if this battleflag caught on, and the KKK and other supremacist groups paraded around with it, do you really think there would be such a "big flap" being made over it? And, the SCV could fly these UNION SUITS all over the Capitol grounds in S. Carolina and no one would really care. And what about that HUGE display near Tampa? A pair of giant long johns would not only amuse travelors in that area, but they would all start looking for the DICKIES outlet store. You see where I'm going with this...racism and bigotry is hard to practice when everyone is laughing their BUTTS off over the grand DRAWERS symbol.

THIS IS FOR "HERITAGE" TO A LOST CAUSE.....
THIS IS FOR "HATE" FROM THE LOSERS......
FLASH * The CWInteractive News website recently wrote an unflattering editorial criticizing the SCV & other so-called "heritage" groups for their failure to protect the Reb Battleflag from use by hate groups over the years. They then took the UVU stand that the Battleflag should only be displayed at reenactments, living history programs and in museums! That has been the position of the UVU leaders since 1996!

FLAGS ACROSS FLORIDA SCV PROJECT - NEW*NEW The League of the South(ers) or LOSers as we like to call them and the SCV in Florida have a joint project of trying to have the AMERICAN FLAG removed from all State Buildings and property, and only the State Flag would fly!! Past Division SCV Commander J. Adams, a member of the LOSERS in Florida, has made this and his Rebel "Flags Across Florida" his big priority. (Adams is the very same guy who recently figured in a seedy porno attack aimed at a lady reporter) I wonder how the SUVCW stands on this? It seems the SCV target in Florida is the U.S. Flag! SUV Camp #1 supports this project...since the Past Camp Commander is also an SCV Commander and a LOSer! Some Florida SCV Camps no longer fly the American Flag and most won't recite the Pledge of Allegiance due to the word "Indivisible"!! As a former SUV Camp Commander and active/loyal SCV member JOHN V. said, "There is nothing in the SCV By-Laws that FORCES us to say the pledge!!" The REB reenactor WebSite (members only) has called for the removal of the Pledge of Allegiance from SCV meetings for years. North Carolina Division SCV has called for the removal of all U.S. Flags from meetings...and still the Sons of Union Veterans support their "Pards",the SCV! FLASH*FLASH* - The SCV along with the LOS are seeking to put their "REB" flag on a Florida license plate!! Since 1996 the SUVCW has supported the display of the REB Battleflag, how will they react to this? The SUVCW Camps in Florida have so many "crossdressers" as members, we will see! Stay tuned...!UPDATE.. Florida legislators have placed a moratorium on approving any new "vanity" plates. It may be just a temporary blow to the Rebs, but we will keep you posted!
|
It is our goal to see that the Rebel Battle Flag be seen ONLY at (1) Reenactments (2) at living history events [including Confederate Memorial Day] and (3) in museums. Perhaps if such a proposal would come from SCV members themselves, Honor could return to the Flag.
